As your Representative, I want to update you on a bipartisan bill I recently introduced with Congressman Elton Gallegly that will ensure the safety of America’s rental car fleet by prohibiting rental car companies from renting or selling unrepaired recalled vehicles.
The Safe Rental Car Act of 2012 is named in honor of Raechel and Jacqueline Houck, ages 24 and 20, of Ojai, California.
The sisters were tragically killed while driving a recalled Chrysler PT Cruiser rented from a major rental car company.
About one month before the Houck sisters were killed, the rental car company received a recall notice that the PT Cruiser had a defective steering component that was prone to catching fire and that it would be repaired by Chrysler free-of-charge.
Despite the warning, the company did not get the vehicle repaired, and rented it out to three other customers before renting it to the Houck sisters.
The defect caused the car to catch fire and crash head-on into a tractor-trailer, killing both sisters.
Defective cars loaned out or sold by rental car companies can be a danger to consumers and other drivers on the road.
That’s why we should honor the memory of the Houck sisters by ensuring that no one will ever again unwittingly rent a vehicle that is under recall and unsafe to drive.
My bill makes it clear that if there is a defect in a rental car it either gets fixed, or it doesn’t get rented or sold – it’s that simple.
