Is UnskewedPolls.com Trustworthy?

2006_House_PollsRecently, a site known as unskewedpolls.com has been quoted as having un biased and unskewed poll numbers, which dramatically alter every poll out there, from conservative to liberal polling agencies. I decided to do a “who is” lookup of the recently touted . Several big name websites are saying these guys have the right unskewed poll numbers. Well, it turns out there are several problems. Several conservative sites I have visited, that I enjoy, are pointing to this site as being believable.
The first I took notice of was who designed the site. It is not a very clean crisp modern site by any means. That in itself does not render a judgment upon the information though. I know plenty of people who have ugly sites that have great information on them. But this site is designed by QSTARIS.
You’ll notice that site looks rather similar as well, sort of early 90′s internet style.
Interestingly enough, both sites have the same owner, administrative contact and technical contact. Now it could be that these are owned by different people, but I’m betting that is not the case. In fact, the unskewedpolls.com site has only been registered since August 28 and the owner lives in Massachusetts.
Ahhhh yes Massachusetts………the plot thickens.
I designed and created RCI’s first web site while learning HTML and then began creating my own web sites. After learning how to create web sites I quickly saw how much poorly done sites there were online, so I created a web site called “The WWW Hall of Shame” to highlight some of the worst examples. Soon after, The WWW Hall of Shame was listed on one of Yahoo’s What’s New or What’s Cool lists and the site was getting 10s of thousands of visitors per day. When the traffic spike slowed down I was still seeing hundreds visit the site each day. I updated it at least 3 times per week and soon sold some advertising on the site through a firm called Burst Media. They are still in business, and I found out I am probably a distant relative of its president Jarvis Coffin. The Coffin name is one that is on my Mom’s side of the family among our ancestors on the island of Nantucket, MA where I was born. It was one of those “small world” moments to realize this, when I asked via e-mail amd he told me he had family in Nantucket.
Though Mr. Chambers has been creating websites for thirteen years, it doesn’t appear that there is much to show for those efforts in visiting his sites, as far as modernity. That, in itself, does not render the content meaningless. It’s just an observation.
He takes into account Democrats who claim the polls are skewed by oversampling Democrats. A link on the site points to an article on The Examiner by….himself, where he writes:
On the Fox News segment “Campaign Insiders” today, Democratic pollsters Pat Caddell and Doug Schoen both confirmed their belief that major polls are skewed in favor of the Democrats by over-sampling of Democratic voters when the surveys are conducted.
The Campaign Insiders segment is co-hosted on the Fox News Channel weekly on Sundays and Monday by Doug Schoen, Pat Caddell, and former New York Republican Congressman John LeBoutillier.
Last week’s Pew poll shows a ten point lead for President Obama, 51 percent to 41 percent, and the last Democracy Corps poll showing a 50 to 46 Obama lead. LeBoutillier said of the two polls, “in both polls, suddenly the president is at the magic 50 percent of above, which he has not been at really all year in any poll.”
His polling data that is listed cites several polls, including Fox News, NBC, and Reuters. Oh wait, apparently he did one himself and called it QStarNews. Sadly, it is nowhere near scientific. It doesn’t even provide a margin of error, but the final results places Mitt Romney eleven points ahead of Barack Obama, which is the only poll to do that.
Interestingly enough he doesn’t cite Gallup, Pew, or Rasmussen. I wonder why that is. It’s probably because they conflict with his narrative about an eleven point Romney lead. But what is this based on? How is the guy even determining the results he is manufacturing?
I don’t doubt that things are not perfect and I don’t doubt that polls can be skewed and probably are in many respects. However, I’m just concerned that people have a serious look at the polling data among reputable polls.
The site has only been functioning for days, not years. The site doesn’t have a track record at all. It has gotten significant traffic from conservative sites, such as TheGateWayPundit.com and WND.com in the past couple of days according to Alexa.
It’s also intimately tied to QStarNews.com which has a terrible internet rating according to Alexa.com. The problem is that the poll numbers given by unskewedpolls.com are not even close to any polling organization, including Fox News, Gallup, Rasmussen, or Pew.
There is no doubt in my mind that in the coming days unskewedpolls.com will be quoted a lot. The question is, do they do scientific polling or are they propaganda? I realize other polls are often propaganda as well, so that’s why I tend to lean towards the more reputable polls that have a significant track record under their belt.
