WASHINGTON – Congress is resisting calls to investigate Al Jazeera, which recently acquired Al Gore’s Current TV, according to Cliff Kincaid, president of America’s Survival.
“It seems logical that the House Homeland Security Committee would look at Al Jazeera as a possible Homeland Security threat, and yet a letter we sent to this committee on January 9 has yet to be received with an official response,” Kincaid said.

He said a committee staffer called him but said arrogantly: ‘We are not listening to you. You aren’t going to drive our agenda.’”
Kincaid said if anyone doubts Al Jazeera should be investigated,  “I say, let’s have a congressional hearing.”
“Let’s put the evidence on the record to demonstrate how Al Jazeera works hand and glove with al-Qaida and other terrorist groups,” he said.
Kincaid said his organization “simply wants Congress to do its job.”
“Ever since Current TV and Al Jazeera made this deal, my group has simply said – let’s investigate and see if the law is being followed, or if Al Jazeera is a terrorist organization.”
Kincaid acknowledged the First Amendment protects foreigners from coming into the U.S. and voicing their opinions, “as long as those are done within the limits of the law.”
“The problem with Al Jazeera is they are already evading current laws, and they qualify, in my opinion, as a global terrorist entity,” he said.
He noted that Al Jazeera also has hired a public relations firm to speak on its behalf.
“DLA Piper is huge, global, multinational law firm that represented Al Jazeera in the purchase of Current TV from Al Gore,” he said. “They will now go on Capitol Hill to sell this transaction behind the scenes and behind close doors to soften up any opposition to this deal. They have all the money in the world from Qatar – which backs Al Jazeera – we simply say, ‘give the American people the chance to see the inner-workings of this deal and have some oversight over this deal.”
The move to hire the PR company came on the heels of a press conference held by America’s Survival in Washington, D.C., that questioned why the U.S. government hasn’t conducted a congressional investigation into Gore’s sale of Current TV to the Middle East news organization.
“The Qatar regime advertises itself as ‘America’s Strongest Partner in the Gulf’ but has supported terrorist groups such as al-Qaida, Hezbollah and Hamas,” said Kincaid.
“Osama bin Laden aide and 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is currently in U.S. custody in Guantanamo Bay for acts of terrorism, lived and worked in Qatar but was allowed to leave for Pakistan as U.S. authorities were trying to apprehend him, according to the report of the 9/11 commission,” Kincaid said.
Anti-jihad blogger and activist Pamela Gellar, a WND columnist, and Jerry Kenney also spoke at the America’s Survival press conference. Kenney discussed his filing of a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice.
The complaint alleges Al Jazeera and Russia Today “represent foreign propaganda television networks, which are in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.”
“They have not registered, as is required by law, and are not disclosing that their programs are distributed on behalf of a foreign government,” the complaint states.
With the purchase of Current TV, Al Jazeera extended its reach in the American market to more than 40 million homes.
Former Vice President Al Gore, who stands to make $100 million in the $500 million sale, said in a statement that the Qatar-owned network shares the same mission as Current TV, which is “to give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling.”
Kincaid told WND, “In the United States, it is against the law to provide material support to terrorists, with ‘material support’ defined as including expert advice or assistance and communications equipment.”
In World War II, he pointed out, Tokyo Rose and Axis Sally “broadcast their anti-American diatribes from overseas and were apprehended by U.S. authorities after the war and sent to prison for treason.”
“In the more shocking Al Jazeera case, the U.S. is officially still at war with global terrorism, but Al Gore is giving the channel a base of operations on American soil with access to 40-50 million homes,” Kincaid said.

In an agreement between al-Qaida and the Islamic regime, three camps have been set up within Iran to train terrorists, WND has learned.
Al-Qaida members are trained to attack NATO forces in Afghanistan and collaborate with the Islamic regime on terrorist activities against Israel, the United States and some European countries, according to a source within the Revolutionary Guards intelligence division.
The camps are in the Sistan and Baluchestan provinces of Iran bordering Pakistan, where the al-Qaida members are trained in terrorism and guerrilla-warfare tactics.
The al-Qaida members, under the pretext of conducting commerce, enter Iran through local bazaars along the Pakistani-Iranian border, the source said. After completing the course, each al-Qaida member is paid the equivalent of $12,000 in appreciation of their participation and further collaboration with the regime’s Quds Forces.
Three training bases have been set up:
  • The Revolutionary Guards base of the 763rd Infantry Division, close to the airport and near Azadi Square in the city of Zahedan. It is equipped with a unit for bomb-making and explosives.
  • Zaboli, a camp built in the desert adjacent to the city of Zabol. It has a harsh 45-day training program.
  • The third site is south in the city of Nikshahr, though recently it was transformed into a type of hospital. It’s not clear what kind of activity occurred there.
Pakistan has collaborated with Iran for well over a decade on the terrorism training, according to the source. He said officials from the Pakistani Consulate across from the 763rd Infantry Division base routinely watch the training.

As reported exclusively by WND Dec. 18, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, took on a greater role in the terrorist movement after the death of Osama bin Laden. He has held meetings with al-Qaida commanders, including bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Adam Yahiye Gadahn, the American who makes videos for al-Qaida, to coordinate terror attacks in France and Germany. After the Tehran meetings in December, members of the regime’s Quds Forces met with al-Qaida operatives in Pakistan to finalize the terrorist plots.
Two Quds Forces commanders, Col. Hamidreza Monfared and Col. Ebrahim Tanabandeh, oversee the training, the source said. Before being transferred to the training sites, they served in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and were involved in plans to blow up the bridge linking Bahrain to Saudi Arabia. The plot was foiled when a terrorist cell was exposed in late 2011.
According to the source, Monfared disclosed in a private meeting with other high-ranking officers that the leader of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia was Guard commander Jafar Sefri, who once served as the liaison between the Revolutionary Guards and the Sadr forces in Iraq. In the Khobar bombing, Sefri used al-Qaida operatives.
The June 25, 1996, truck bomb killed 19 U.S. servicemen and injured nearly 500 others of many nationalities. After a lengthy investigation, the FBI concluded Iran was involved in the attack.
The source said another Guard commander, Abass Agha Zamani, was instrumental in the Khobar bombing by arranging the transfer of funds and explosives for the mission.

Nicknamed Abu Sharif, Zamani was a key figure early on after the Islamic Revolution in the formation of the Revolutionary Guards. At one time he served as Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan.
Another figure, Mohammad Faghir Gomshadzehi, is active in transferring explosives into Pakistan from border villages. But the source believes the activity is outside the Pakistan-Iran agreement and is being done without the knowledge of the Pakistanis.
The source named five other Guard commanders involved in the training of al-Qaida members: Capt. Hassan Tanabandeh, Lt. Ejdar Hashemi, Lt. Mohammad Hassan Nik Pey, Lt. Rasool Assadollahi and Lt. Kamal Ahmadi.
Khamenei has repeatedly warned America that should war break out, not only will Iran destroy Israel but it also will attack the U.S. homeland. The source said the regime, through its terrorist proxies such as Hezbollah and al-Qaida, is preparing terror attacks to destabilize the West if sanctions become unbearable for the regime or if a military confrontation takes place over its illicit nuclear program.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Scores of people were injured Saturday in a clash in Bangladesh's capital between police and hundreds of demonstrators, as protests continued in the Muslim world against a film produced in the United States that denigrates Islam's Prophet Muhammad.
In Pakistan, where more than 20 people died Friday in clashes with police in cities throughout the country, a Cabinet minister offered a .
Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Balor told The Associated Press that he would pay the reward out of his own pocket. He urged the Taliban and al-Qaida to perform the "sacred duty" of helping locate and kill the filmmaker.
The film has sparked violent protests throughout the Muslim world that resulted in the deaths of dozens, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.
In Bangladesh, police fired tear gas and used batons on Saturday to disperse the stone-throwing protesters, who were from about a dozen Islamic groups.
The protesters burned several vehicles, including a police van, witnesses said.
Dozens of protesters were arrested at the demonstration and inside the nearby National Press Club, where participants took refuge, a Dhaka Metropolitan Police official said on condition of anonymity in line with police policy. Police and witnesses said scores of people were injured.
The clash erupted when authorities attempted to halt the demonstration, police said. Authorities have banned all protests near the city's main Baitul Mokarram mosque since Friday, when more than 2,000 people marched and burned an effigy of President Barack Obama.
The protesters announced a nationwide general strike on Sunday to protest the police action.
In Pakistan, protests continued Saturday, with more than 1,500 people, including women and children, rallying in Pakistan's capital. The crowd was peaceful but angry over the release of the video called "Innocence of Muslims," which portrays Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester.
The protesters — from the Minhaj-ul-Quran religious group — marched through Islamabad's streets and then gathered near Parliament, chanting slogans against the filmmaker and demanding stern punishment for him.
Thousands of people also protested Saturday in Nigeria's largest city, Kano. The crowd marched from a mosque to the palace of the Emir of Kano, the region's top spiritual leader for Muslims.
About 200 students in Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir, chanted "Down with America" and "Long live Islam" in a peaceful protest. Some carried a placard that read, "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger."

NEW YORK – An Egyptian security official speaking to WND today said there is information about large-scale infiltration by al-Qaida and its affiliated Jihadia Salafiya groups within the Libyan security apparatus.
The claim comes amid speculation about how Islamists who targeted the U.S. mission in Libya seemed to have inside information about the movement of the American diplomats in the country as well as the location of a supposedly secret U.S. safehouse in Libya.

The attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya came in two phases. The first phase saw a mob arrive at the one-story villa that serves as the consulate, with heavily armed men later coming to the scene with armored vehicles and rocket-propelled grenades. Ambassador Chris Stevens and another American were killed in the initial attack.
Libyan security forces then evacuated the consulate staff to a supposedly secret safehouse located about a mile away. Hours later, a second assault targeted the safe house, killing two Americans and wounding a number of Libyans and Americans.
U.S. backing Islamic groups behind Libya, Egypt attacks?
The claim of al-Qaida infiltration of Libyan security forces comes afterWND documented earlier this week how the U.S. supported Libyan rebels amid widespread reports that al-Qaida groups were incorporated in the rebel ranks.
The attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya is being widely blamed on al-Qaida-linked groups.
One witness to the mob scene in Libya said some of the gunmen attacking the U.S. installation had identified themselves as members of Ansar al-Shariah, which represents al-Qaida in Yemen and Libya.
The al-Qaida offshoot released a statement denying its members were behind the deadly attack, but a man identified as a leader of the Ansar brigade told Al Jazeera the group indeed took part in the Benghazi attack.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton blamed the attack in Libya on a “small and savage group,” not the government or people of Libya.
In Egypt, demonstrators earlier this week tore down the American flag outside Cairo’s U.S. embassy and burned it reportedly in protest of a film that depicts the Islamic figure Muhammad in a negative way
According to reports, the crowd of around 2,000 protesters outside the U.S. embassy in Cairo consisted of a mixture of Islamists and teenage soccer fans known for fighting police. The protesters reportedly played a part in the U.S.-supported revolt that toppled Hosni Mubarak’s regime last year.
The revolt was successful largely after President Obama called for Mubarak, a longtime U.S. ally in the region, to step down.
However, questions remain about the nature of U.S. support for the revolutions in Egypt and Libya, including reports the U.S.-aided rebels that toppled Moammar Gadhafi’s regime in Libya consisted of al-Qaida and jihad groups. The U.S. provided direct assistance, including weapons and finances, to the Libyan rebels.
Similarly, the Obama administration is currently aiding the rebels fighting Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria amid widespread reports that al-Qaida jihadists are included in the ranks of the Free Syrian Army.
During the revolution against Gadhafi’s regime, the U.S. admitted to directly arming the rebel groups.
At the time, rebel leader Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi admitted in an interview that a significant number of the Libyan rebels were al-Qaida fighters, many of whom had fought U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He insisted his fighters “are patriots and good Muslims, not terrorists,” but added that the “members of al-Qaida are also good Muslims and are fighting against the invader.”
Adm. James Stavridis, NATO supreme commander for Europe, admitted Libya’s rebel force may include al-Qaida: “We have seen flickers in the intelligence of potential al-Qaida, Hezbollah.”
Former CIA officer Bruce Riedel went even further, telling the Hindustan Times: “There is no question that al-Qaida’s Libyan franchise, Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, is a part of the opposition. It has always been Gadhafi’s biggest enemy and its stronghold is Benghazi. What is unclear is how much of the opposition is al-Qaida/Libyan Islamic Fighting Group – 2 percent or 80 percent.”
In Syria, meanwhile, the U.S. may be currently supporting al-Qaida and other jihadists fighting with the rebels targeting Assad’s regime.
Last month, WND quoted a senior Syrian source claiming at least 500 hardcore mujahedeen from Afghanistan, many of whom were spearheading efforts to fight the U.S. there, have been killed in clashes with Syrian forces last month.
Also last month, WND reported that Jihadiya Salafia in the Gaza Strip, a group that represents al-Qaida in the coastal territory, had declared three days of mourning for its own jihadists who died in Syria in recent weeks.
There have been widespread reports of al-Qaida among the Syrian rebels, including in reports by Reuters and the New York Times.
WND reported in May there is growing collaboration between the Syrian opposition and al-Qaida as well as evidence the opposition is sending weapons to jihadists in Iraq, according to an Egyptian security official.
The military official told WND that Egypt has reports of collaboration between the Syrian opposition and three al-Qaida arms, including one the operates in Libya:
  • Jund al-Sham, which is made up of al-Qaida militants who are Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese;
  • Jund al-Islam, which in recent years merged with Ansar al-Islam, an extremist group of Sunni Iraqis operating under the al-Qaida banner and operating in Yemen and Libya;
  • Jund Ansar al-Allah, an al-Qaida group based in Gaza linked to Palestinian camps in Lebanon and Syria.
U.S. officials have stated the White House is providing nonlethal aid to the Syrian rebels while widespread reports have claimed the U.S. has been working with Arab countries to ensure the opposition in Syria is well armed.
