Obama weighs in on Tebow, Penn State controversy

President Obama said Thursday that the New York Jets quarterback situation would make him "pretty nervous" if he were a fan of the team.

The Jets acquired Denver phenom Tim Tebow in the off-season, but are playing him as a backup to Mark Sanchez.

"I've got to tell you, I don't like the idea of a quarterback controversy at the start of the season," Obama said on Columbus' 97.1 The Fan in a Thursday call-in appearance on The Common Man & The Torg's radio program.

"If I was a Jets fan, I'd be pretty nervous," Obama said. Sanchez "led them to the playoffs two years in the row," he said.

"Tebow seems to be a wonderful young man and he's got just a great winning attitude. He steps up when things count," Obama said. "But there's going to be a lot of tension in that situation."

Woody Johnson, the Jets owner, also happens to be a major Mitt Romney backer.

Obama also weighed in on the Penn State controversy, saying that the unprecedented sanctions levied against the Lions was an appropriate punishment for the child molestation scandal that has rocked the campus.

"I have been a big admirer of Penn State football," Obama said.

But "there are some things that are just more important than sports," he said. "Making sure our kids are safe is more important than sports."

Was the NCAA Penalty of Penn State too harsh?

This twenty year event needs be a lesson to all other schools that worship sports, science, or any-other thing.

In the wake of the disturbing revelations over the past several months in the Penn State child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, the NCAA has levied “unprecedented” sanctions against the university’s football program.

The athletic organization said that by promoting a “football first” culture at the school, the university enabled Sandusky’s pedophilic activities and failed to uphold and value institutional integrity.

“As we evaluated the situation, the victims affected by Jerry Sandusky and the efforts by many to conceal his crimes informed our actions,” said Association President Mark Emmert. “At our core, we are educators. Penn State leadership lost sight of that.”

Penn State’s failures have resulted in the NCAA’s imposition of a $60 million fine against the university, equivalent to the annual gross revenue of its football program, to be paid into an endowment for programs aimed at preventing child sex abuse.

The athletic organization also imposed a four-year football postseason ban and vacated all of the university’s wins from 1998 through 2011.

“Football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people,” Emmert said.

NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State

(CBS News) CBS News has learned that the NCAA will announce what a high-ranking association source called "unprecedented" penalties against both the Penn State University football team and the school.

"I've never seen anything like it," the source told correspondent Armen Keteyian.

NCAA President Mark Emmert will make the announcement Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the organization's headquarters in Indianapolis.

The penalties come in the wake of the independent report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that chronicled repeated efforts by four top Penn State officials, including former football Joe Paterno, to conceal allegations of serial child sex abuse Jerry Sandusky over a 14-year period.

The NCAA had been awaiting the school's response to four key questions pertaining to the sex abuse scandal, including issues involving institutional control and ethics.
