According to Libyan officials, the U.S. ambassador - John Christopher Stevens (left) - had been on his way to a safer venue after protesters had attacked the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi and opened fire, killing a staff member. They were protesting at a film - made by Californian real estate developer Sam Bacile - that they deemed blasphemous to the Prophet Mohammed. The film, excerpts from which were dubbed in Arabic were posted on YouTube, also triggered violent protests in Egypt where a mob climbed the walls of the American Embassy in Cairo.
