A pair of pro-Israel activists were assaulted both physically and verbally at an pro-Palestinian rally in Oakland, Calif. last week. The video was uploaded to YouTube on Friday, though the rally reportedly took place on March 13 at the Frank Ogawa Plaza on the fourth anniversary of the wounding of Tristan Anderson, an Oakland resident who was injured in the West Bank while protesting against the Israeli military.

The two pro-Israel activists staged their own counter-protest by drawing messages on the concrete in chalk. The female demonstrator, later identified as 22-year-old Hannah Larson, wrote a phrase in Hebrew meaning “the nation of Israel lives.” The other male pro-Israel activist wrote a more antagonizing phrase: “Hamas sucks pig sh*t.”

Once other anti-Israel protesters realized the duo were counter-protesting in support of Israel, one of the women at the rally went off. The woman, identified as Gabby Silverman, grabbed the chalk from Larson’s hand and began shoving and cursing at her furiously.

“You get the f**k out of here,” Silverman can be heard yelling. “Get the f**k out of here… You f**king whore. You get the f**k away from me, you f**king right-wing sh*thead.”

One of the anti-Israel protesters appears to inform them that one of their friends was “shot by the Israeli military.”

Even as Larson and her companion attempted to leave the scene, Silverman, along with a group of her fellow protesters, continued to follow and intimidate them into the street. She also continued to shove and verbally attack them.

One of the other anti-Israel protesters attempted to calm the woman down and hold her back, but let go after another woman told her, “no, no, let her do her thing.”

“You f**king right-wing piece of sh*t!” Silverman continued to scream.

The two pro-Israel activists, completely outnumbered, were driven all the way onto the street.

“You angered an entire crowd and you should get the f**k out of here,” another man chimed in. “You gonna stand up to 60 people or you gonna get the f**k out of here?”

The confrontation continued to rage until security showed up to diffuse to the situation.

Silverman later reportedly wrote of the incident on her Facebook page:

“We created a space at the plaza to chalk the names of our dead friends and imprisoned comrades and these zionist pieces of sh*t chalk ‘am yisrael chai’ over it. This is exactly the settler colonialist mindset that we are fighting against, putting their right wing bullsh*t over the space for our dead friends. ‘Am yisrael chai’ means ‘the people of Israel live’, which seems mellow enough but its the main slogan of the right wing. My only regret is calling her a whore. That was inappropriate and I’m sorry. Solidarity with whores everywhere!”

Understanding $16,000,000,000,000 in Debt

I don't understand how much $16 trillion ($16T) of debt is.  So, to help myself, I break it down to terms I can understand.

• There are about 254,000,000 registered vehicles in this country (2009 data).  Big number this is.  But dividing the number into $16T would give a valuation of about $69,000 for each of them.  This is somewhat higher than the average cost of automobiles on the road.  Another way to put it is to say the U.S. national debt could replace the entire U.S. fleet of automobiles with, for example, brand-new, fully equipped Lexus ES460s.  Nice cars. 

• The total of state budgets in 2010 was about $666B.  Dividing into $16T gives about 24.  This means the $16T national debt could completely cover all state budgets for about 24 years.

• The total annual foreign aid budget of the U.S. is reckoned to be about $54B.  Dividing this into $16T gives about 296, meaning that the national debt of the U.S. could cover all foreign aid for almost three centuries.

• The population of the United States is currently estimated at 312,780,968.  Dividing this into $16T gives the current encumbrance to each citizen of about $51,000.

• In 2008, 64.3 billion gallons of gasoline were consumed in this country.  It is surely higher now.  At $3.50 per gallon, this implies a total cost to the U.S. consumer of about $225B.  Dividing into the $16T yields about 71, implying that the U.S. national debt could pay for all gasoline consumed in the USA for the next 71 years -- assuming, of course, that annual consumption remains constant.

• In the month of October 2012, the monthly cost of home food for a family of four (liberal plan from the USDA) was about $1,100, making the annual cost about $13,200.  Multiplying this by the possible numbers of families of four (total population divided by four), the total annual home food costs to all citizens are roughly $1T.  Dividing this into $16T implies, in round terms, that the U.S. national debt could pay all home food costs for the next 15-plus years.  If we all ate with the USDA thrifty plan, the $16T U.S. national debt could pay all home food costs in the United States for the next 29 years.

That was fun.  So $16T is a really huge amount.  I still don't understand it much beyond that. 

There is a foundational lesson in all this.  The number 16T in dollars or any other measure is fundamentally beyond the comprehension of most of us.  And I work with big numbers all the time.  What is not taught in the schools these days, what is not anywhere the formal curriculum, and what is fully unknown to almost everyone is just what these big numbers mean, and how huge they really are.  Sure, it is easy to say that the speed of light (180K mps) translates into 180(mps) x 60(s/m) x (60[m/h] x 24[h/d] x 365[h/y] = 5,865,696,000,000 miles per year (~6 trillion miles).  But who really knows what this means -- in a visceral sense? 

Getting back to the $16T above, we caution two principal groups: Republicans and Democrats.  Neither side really understands anything about the true magnitude of $16T.

1. The Republicans: The public does not understand how much money this is.  Do you?  Don't compare with the GDP.  This is making a comparison of a quantity people don't understand with a quantity people don't understand.  It you wish to make a point, explain to folks how much money this is.  Do it in terms they understand.  My goodness, don't explain in analogy to Greece.  Most people don't know where Greece is, much less care about the Greeks' circumstances.

2. The Democrats: Be cautious about borrowing more money.  Understand the magnitude of what is already encumbered.  Think about this amount in terms you understand.  Understand the profound and massive effort required for the pay-back.

3. To both parties: Even if the economy came roaring back with whatever policy for job growth is promoted and enacted, the $16T debt is virtually beyond the capacity for repayment.  This country seems to be faced with default, or ultra-severe tax penalties on the next couple of generations.  For those aged over 50, the consequence is not that great.  The younger groups will be hit especially hard.

• Chrysler Auto Workers Busted

DETROIT (WJBK) - Two years ago Fox 2 Problem Solver Rob Wolchek got a tip from someone inside Chrysler's  Jefferson North Assembly plant about what some workers were doing at the park on their lunch break.

For several days our TV crews followed some of these workers.

Play the video above to see what these guys were doing before they went back to work in the factory in 2010.

When we showed the video to executives from Chrysler they were embarrassed.  The company had just been bailed out by the government and president Obama stood on the floor of the very same plant just a few months earlier. Obama said he believed in the workers and that he believed in Chrysler.

Chrysler was trying to remake its image and the activity in video we recorded certainly didn't fit the "Imported from Detroit" campaign.

Chrysler suspended two workers and fired thirteen others.
Their cases ended up in arbitration and the arbitrator sided with the fired workers. They came back to work this week.

And now this statement from the auto maker:

"Chrysler Group LLC acknowledges the reinstatement of a number of employees  from the Jefferson North assembly plant who were  discharged from the company in September 2010 after  appearing in a local TV station's story about their off-duty conduct."

While the company does not agree with the ultimate decision of the arbitrator, we respect the grievance  procedure process as outlined in the collective bargaining  agreement and our relationship with the UAW.  Unfortunately,  the company was put in a very difficult position because of the way the story was investigated and ultimately revealed to  the public.  These employees from Jefferson North have been off work for more than two years.  The time has come to put  this situation behind us and resume our focus on building quality products that will firmly establish Chrysler Group's  position in the marketplace."

Canadian Rebecca Jeanette Rubin, 39, is accused of being one of the worst eco-terrorists in United States history.

On November 29, she surrendered to the FBI at the Canada-Washington border and Rubin is now being held in Washington. Rubin will eventually be moved to Oregon where she will stand trail for federal arson, using a destructive device, and conspiracy charges, stemming from crimes allegedly committed in Oregon, Colorado, and California.

According to the FBI, Rubin is charged with participating in a number of arson cases including:

• November 30, 1997, U.S. Bureau of Land Management Wild Horse and Burro Facility (Oregon)
• October 19, 1998, Eight counts of arson stemming from a string of attacks that destroyed Two Elk Lodge, and several other Vail ski area buildings (Colorado)
• October 15, 2001, BLM Litchfield Wild Horse and Burro Corals (California)
• December 22, 1998, Attempted arson at U.S. Forest Industries, Inc. (Oregon)

Rubin was part of group calling themselves “The Family”, which had 13 members and was closely affiliated with the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). The group’s attacks on ski resorts, wild horse conservation facilities, and other targets were done, according to a grand jury indictment, in an attempt to “influence and affect the conduct of government, private business and the civilian population through force, violence, sabotage, mass destruction, intimidation, and coercion, and to retaliate against government and private businesses by similar means.”

Ten of The Family’s members have already stood trial for the above crimes and been convicted. Rubin is slated to become the 11th.

While each count of arson and attempted arson carries mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison (up to 20 years per count), the “use of a destructive device in relation to a crime of violence” carries a mandatory sentence of 30 years,and the conspiracy charge a maximum of five years, the other members of Rubin’s “family” have received sentences ranging from six years to as little of as 37 months.

As Breitbart News suggested last week, it appears Chief Justice John Roberts did, in fact, switch his vote on the Obamacare decision under pressure from President Barack Obama, the Democrats, and the mainstream media. John Fund at National Review has more details today--including evidence about a bizarre address by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chair of the Judiciary Committee, that singled out Roberts himself:

Indeed, Senator Patrick Leahy (Vt., D.) , the chair of the Judiciary Committee, suddenly took to the floor on May 14 and directly addressed Roberts, urging him in harshly partisan tones to uphold Obamacare and maintain “the proper role of the judicial branch.”

Stewart Baker, a partner at the Washington law firm Steptoe & Johnson, writes at the Volokh Conspiracy that he found the whole campaign against Roberts weird and unusual, given that the justices’ conference vote on Obamacare had been held six weeks earlier. Why “would the chair of the Judiciary Committee risk the appearance of trying to harshly strongarm the Court when his remarks wouldn’t make the slightest difference?” he asks. “The Leahy speech reads like it was written for an audience of one. It offers flattery and it offers threats, all of them personalized to appeal to Chief Justice Roberts alone.”

Fund adds that the White House likely benefited from leaks at the Court, and almost certainly knew of Roberts's switch--just as it almost certainly knew of the initial vote to throw out the individual mandate in March:

The week before the Supreme Court announced its decision, the White House was clearly hinting to many in the media and on Capitol Hill that they expected a 5–4 opinion that would hinge on the taxing-power issue. Did someone leak? Sunday on Face the Nation, Jan Crawford of CBS News said that two reliable sources told her that Roberts originally voted, in late March, with the four conservative justices to invalidate the individual mandate. According to Crawford, Roberts suddenly changed sides some six weeks later and then resisted “a month-long desperate campaign by the conservative justices to bring him back to the fold.”

I’ve learned from my own sources that after voting to invalidate the mandate, the chief did express some skepticism about joining the four conservatives in throwing out the whole law. At the justices’ conference, there was discussion about accepting the Obama administration’s argument, which was that, if the individual mandate was removed, the provisions governing community rating and guaranteed issue of insurance would have to go too but that the rest of the law might stand. The chief justice was equivocal, though, in his views on that point.

The more the public learns about Roberts's decision, the more people are likely to hate it. Fund notes that even David Brooks of the New York Times agrees that Roberts "had to get to a certain result, and he was going to find a way by hook or by crook." It's a conclusion that aptly expresses how Obamacare was conceived, how it was passed, and now how it has been upheld by one of the worst decisions in recent years.

Renowned artiste Glenn Beck put an Obama bobblehead in a glass jar, “urinated” into it, called it art and is now selling it for the low, low price of $25,000. (While Beck initially claimed to have peed into the jar, it is actually beer, according to MSN.)

Beck created “Obama in Pee Pee” in response to a Boston artist who made a controversial painting of President Obama being crucified.

On his radio show Tuesday, Beck said that he didn’t like the painting because of the whole Obama-as-Jesus subtext, but that he supported the artist’s right under the First Amendment to create and display it.

“Art is in the eye of the beholder, and this guy has a right to do this. I think it’s offensive. I don’t think it’s close to reality, but whatever floats your boat. I support his right to do exactly that. I agree with him that people who are upset should not trump his right to be able to do it and be able to hang it wherever he wants — as long as it’s wanted there,” Beck said.

In solidarity with the Boston artist’s First Amendment rights, Beck jumped multiple, crazier steps ahead by creating “Obama in Pee Pee.”

In an 11-minute video for his website BlazeTV, Beck (clad in a velvet blazer and holding a pipe), takes us on an art history journey using a variety of accents, from British to what is supposed to be French, but what actually sounds like Topol from “Fiddler on the Roof.” Beck points out controversial art from nudity in the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo to “Obama in Pee Pee” by Glenn Beck, because they are totally in the same category.

The artwork/publicity stunt will soon be on sale for $250,000, just in time for Christmas. Make the staunch First Amendment supporter in your family filled with glee by putting ”Obama in Pee Pee” in their stocking.
